What is a |Virtual Address?|

Unlike a PO Box, a virtual address includes mail handling, digital scans, disposal services, and a virtual mailbox dashboard where all your mail is uploaded. Personal virtual address services must also comply with Commercial Mail Receiving Agency requirements.

Who is it for?

A lot of people dream about traveling around the country—and the world—while taking their job with them and staying in touch with contacts back home. This can take a variety of forms including digital nomads, expats, and retirees living or traveling abroad.
  • For many digital nomads, the hard part about online shopping isn’t the shipping address so much as the billing address. Many, though not all, banks in the U.S. will allow you to use a virtual address to open or transfer a personal checking or savings account.

  • Our Virtual Address service can be used for purely personal reasons or it can facilitate your contract business as a sole proprietor. Starting with the 2008 financial crisis and accelerating during the pandemic, the gig economy has fully matured. At the same time, many workers are finding a new standard of professionalism and marketing savvy is necessary to keep finding high-paying gigs.

  • You may be able to use a friend or family member’s address as your permanent domicile for filing tax returns with the IRS. That doesn’t mean you want them opening every piece of mail that arrives in your name–or throwing something important away because they thought it was junk mail.

  • In the age of doxxing, you don’t need to own a business entity or an A-list celebrity to want to protect your personal information. A personal virtual address can be used for all kinds of correspondence, making your current or new residential address considerably harder to obtain for those who may wish you harm.

  • For years, you’ve been reading about the cost of living in other countries including some that have always been on your bucket list. As you start to put together a concrete plan to make it happen, you may realize a virtual address for personal use will help you stay in touch with more people and solve a lot of what-if problems that may arise.

  • Everybody’s got their thing. Grocery shopping. Internet service providers. Doing laundry. For some people, it’s opening, scanning, and sorting the mail. Whether they contain treats or household necessities, packages are one thing. But for everything else, let us take care of the worst parts of the mail.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • No, you can’t establish residency with a virtual address. Most customers default to picking the same state in which they’ve established residency, but you don’t have to. Most people are able to establish residency with a friend or family member’s domicile, and then use their virtual address for pretty much everything else. Moreover, if you’re still exploring creative ways of establishing new residency without paying a lot for rent, you may want to pick a state with easier residency rules like South Dakota, Wyoming, Nevada, Texas, or Florida.

  • You can complete this USPS Change of Address service in just a few minutes, though it can take as long as 7-10 business days for the USPS to officially start forwarding your mail. There’s no reason to think it will affect your friend’s or family member’s personal mail delivery. The USPS has no trouble tracking and triaging mail by the name the mail is addressed to.

  • You can view your scanned mail online anytime through your secure dashboard. As a default, you’ll receive instant email notifications when new mail is available.

  • Our Personal Virtual Address service is not a mail forwarding service. We only forward checks and debit or credit cards to a U.S. address you provide. All other mail is scanned in high-resolution color and securely uploaded to your account for easy online access. We do not accept packages or oversized deliveries and will return these to the sender.

  • Once your mail is scanned and uploaded for you to view online, digital copies are securely stored for the entire length of your subscription. After 1-2 weeks, we securely shred the physical copies using enterprise-grade shredders and disposal processes. It’s all done with your privacy in mind—and it means less paper clutter for you.

  • To comply with federal postal regulations, all virtual address users must complete USPS Form 1583. This form authorizes us to receive mail on your behalf and ensures your mail is handled legally and securely. Without this form, we cannot activate your mailbox. It is a required step for all customers using a Commercial Mail Receiving Agency (CMRA) like ours.

  • To complete USPS Form 1583, you must submit two forms of identification. One must be a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license or passport. The second ID needs to confirm your name and address, such as a lease agreement or mortgage, home or car insurance policy, voter card, or vehicle registration. All documents must be valid and unexpired. A driver’s license and passport can also be used together to satisfy the two-ID requirement. This process is required to activate your account and remain in compliance with USPS regulations.

  • You can use our Personal Virtual Address, but unfortunately, you must use your legal name, not your DBA. As a sole proprietor, you can receive mail related to your work as a self-employed contractor. However, the mail must still be addressed to you personally to qualify as personal mail.

  • There is no limit to how much mail you can receive. Your account includes unlimited incoming mail and unlimited digital storage for scanned documents.
